Africa-Press – South-Africa. The stage is set at the Brigitte Mabandla Justice College in Pretoria as the much-anticipated Madlanga Commission of Inquiry gets underway on Wednesday morning.
The inquiry seeks to get to the bottom of corruption and malfeasance claims that KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi made in July about the criminal justice system.
The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party is irate as their application to have the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into corruption and malfeasance claims that Mkhwanazi made in July about the criminal justice system.
Tomorrow (Thursday), the party will hear the outcome of its North Gauteng High Court application to have the establishment of the commission declared unlawful.
This morning (Wednesday), the MK Party is expected to stage a picket at Brigitte Mabandla Justice College.
The MK Party’s Gauteng spokesperson, Abel Tau, told Eyewitness News that, “We as uMkhonto weSizwe party will be picketing outside the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria today [Wednesday]. We believe that Justice Madlanga is allowing himself to be drawn into the political arena.
“Our case pertaining to precisely this commission and the decisions that the president had taken was set down for Thursday and Friday, which is a fact that he himself, Justice Madlanga, and obviously the commission staff had known for quite some time.
“The fact that they hurriedly put together this start on a Wednesday, which has never been done before. I mean, mostly these types of sittings would start on a Monday. Even the 1st of September would have been a Monday.”
He added that “the judiciary is compromised, the Madlanga Commission is nothing but a smokescreen to try and shield those who are implicated”.
“We are still standing firm to say this commission should not be happening. And we are also of the view that Senzo Mutunu should have been fired.
In fact, we believe that the R149 million plus hat would be the bill that the taxpayer is footing is very unfortunate in that President Cyril Ramaphosa is not doing what he is supposed to do as a sitting president and is violating his oath of office.
MKHWANAZI TO SPILL THE BEANS
After controversy, court cases, questioning and wondering, Mkhwanazi is set to substantiate his suppositions on Wednesday.
The inquiry, chaired by retired Constitutional Court Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, is tasked with ventilating allegations of interference and corruption within the criminal justice system.
The commission will have to make recommendations for the president to take action after the findings.
Mkhwanazi accused Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya of being involved in the rot.
Both men insist their claims are not true.
Mchunu and Sibiya have since been suspended.
President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Firoz Cachalia as the acting police minister in the interim.
In an X post on Wednesday morning, the MK Party wrote: “President Cyril] Ramaphosa’s appointments and protection deal have exposed deep cracks in our democracy. From [suspended police minister] Senzo Mchunu’s costly shield, to parachuting [Firoz] Cachalia and Judge Madlanga’s controversial role, South Africa deserves accountability, not capture.”
