G20 Summit Showcases South Africa's Hosting Ability

Africa-Press – South-Africa. Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said the G20 leaders’ summit is Africa’s best chance to showcase its ability to host a gathering of the world’s biggest economies.

She said another opportunity for Africa to hold the G20 Presidency again could come after 20 years, and South Africa must make the gathering of international leaders a major success.

Ntshavheni gave an update on preparations for the November summit at a post Cabinet briefing yesterday (Thursday).

She noted that South Africa’s approach is to host the G20 Summit not just for the country, but in a way that represents the entire African continent.

Ntshavheni said the summit is also about putting the African agenda on the table, including reforms in global financial institutions and climate change.

She said the country must makethe most of it.

“Because the next session of the G20 that will come around in 20 years’ time will maybe be with the African Union. But this is our best shot as Africa to showcase our ability to host a platform of the nature of the G20.”

Ntshavheni added that reports of a R150 million funding shortfall won’t affect preparations for the summit – which has a budget of about R700 million.
