Africa-Press – South-Africa. CAPE TOWN – Sport, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie says the unveiling of a wall of remembrance for Robben Island political prisoners will ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten.
McKenzie unveiled the wall on Saturday, which features the names of more than 5,000 people who were incarcerated on the island, from KhoiKhoi chief, Harry the Strandloper, to the late President Nelson Mandela.
The ceremony on Robben Island has also brought together former political prisoners from both South Africa and Namibia.
McKenzie said new statues would also be erected at the Robben Island Museum to commemorate some of the former inmates.
“Five thousand prisoners have been on Robben Island from the time of Autshumato, Harry th Strandloper, to the time of Nelson Mandela… Ahmed Kathrada… all of them will be remembered. They will never be forgotten again.”
