Africa-Press – South-Africa. Former president Thabo Mbeki has challenged KwaZulu-Natal leaders to act urgently to address a World Bank report that labelled the port of Durban as the worst-performing hub in the world.
The port slipped several places from the 399th spot in the 2023 report to the worst of 405 ports in 2024.
The World Bank container port index for 2024 was released last week, where Cape Town ranked 400th.
Mbeki addressed African National Congress (ANC) members at the party’s political school in Durban at the weekend.
He told delegates that the party needs to rebuild its internal structures to prevent a further decline in governance.
“That draws attention to the critical importance of the quality of the leadership in this room. The leadership in this room needs to change that report so that the World Bank says that Durban is one of the best-performing seaports in the world, but that depends on our leadership.”
Mbeki said KZN’s leadership owes it to the country to get its house in order.
“What you do is important for the province, but it’s also important for the future of the country. So, it becomes a common challenge.”
