Africa-Press – South-Africa. Suspended deputy commissioner Shadrack Sibiya said that he supported the disbanding of the political killings task team.
But he denied carrying out any illegal instruction to disband the task team at the behest of controversial businessmen, Brown Mogotsi and Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, who mentioned Sibiya in text messages.
On Monday, Sibiya was giving evidence on the first day of testimony before Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating police corruption.
Sibiya has denied all the allegations of interference levelled against him by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola.
Sibiya has been implicated for his role in the directive from Minister Senzo Mchunu, who ordered the closure of the political killings task team.
While denying any part of the plan, he told the committee that the task team needed to be scrutinised and saw nothing wrong with its disbandment.
“I can tell you that we have other political killings throughout the country that are not being attended by the PKTT.”
He also said that Masemola should have acted differently if he had a problem with the directive from Mchunu.
“If the national commissioner had a problem with this type of instruction, it is the type of instruction that was not ever supposed to go further down for implementation.”
Sibiya returns on Tuesday for his last day of testimony.
