Public Has 30 Days to Comment on DA's B-BBEE Repeal

Africa-Press – South-Africa. The public has 30 days to submit its report on the Democratic Alliance (DA)’s proposed bill seeking to repeal the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act.

The DA’s Public Procurement Amendment Bill was officially gazetted on Tuesday for public comment.

Among its many proposals, the bill seeks to do away with race requirements for companies that want to do business with the state, replacing it with an outcome-driven system.

At least two parties in the Government of National Unity (GNU), the African National Congress (ANC) and Good, have rejected the DA’s bill, saying it ignores the country’s economic inequalities caused by apartheid.

The DA’s head of policy, Mathew Cuthbert, said the gazetting of the bill represented the first step of a legislative process that will bring about a new empowerment policy, ending decades of BEE failure.

“BEE has turned ANC insiders into billionaires, while 44 million South Africans have been relegated to poverty, and 12 million are trapped in unemployment queues. The DA will not allow this to stand any longer, because we care deeply about the people of South Africa.”
