Ramaphosa Doubles Protection Efforts After Witness Killing

Africa-Press – South-Africa. In the wake of the murder of a witness at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, President Cyril Ramaphosa said efforts to protect participants will be ramped up.

Through a statement, Ramaphosa slammed the killing of Witness D, identified as Marius van der Merwe, who was shot at his home in Brakpan last night.

Last month, van der Merwe testified about the 2022 murder of a robbery suspect in Brakpan and an alleged cover-up involving suspended Ekurhulenni Metro Police Department (EMPD) acting chief Julius Mkhwanazi.

According to police, Witness D was shot multiple times as he arrived home with his wife just after 20:30 on Friday.

His firearm, cellphone and wallet were all found on him, strengthening the view that the killers were hired to eliminate him.

In response, President Cyril Ramaphosa extended his heartfelt condolences to van der Merwe’s family.

Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya: “As government, we will redouble our efforts to protect whistleblowers, including witnesses before the Madlanga Commission and the commission itself, as they serve the nation with bravery in the face of criminal threats”.

Police are now investigating a case of murder, vowing to track down the hitmen and mastermind behind the shooting.
