SIU Vows to Recover Misappropriated Public Funds

Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) said that it will spare no resources to recoup state funds from beneficiaries of fraud and corruption at public institutions.

The latest warning follows an out-of-court settlement between the SIU and media personality Minnie Dlamini.

The 35-year-old actress and TV presenter was one of the beneficiaries of funds irregularly received from the Mshandukani Foundation as part of the ongoing investigation into corruption at the Lottery Commission.

She’s now agreed to pay back the full number of R50,000.

SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganygo said, “These funds were subsequently distributed to several beneficiaries, including Ms Dlamini, without lawful justification or in contravention of the grant agreement.”

Kganyago said the corruption watchdog will continue to pursue civil and criminal action against those accused of misappropriating state funds.

“Ms Dlamini has fully cooperated with the SIU investigation and has acknowledged that the funds were not lawfully due to her. The repayment forms part of the SIU’s broader efforts to recover misappropriated public funds and hold all recipients of irregular payments accountable, regardless of the amount involved.”
