Africa-Press – South-Africa. KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police are urging Durban CBD residents to expose criminal activities involving alleged rogue officers.
The call follows reports of officers allegedly working with criminals in the Point area of Durban.
The area in Durban’s South Beach is known for crimes, including the running of drug dens.
Police raids have resulted in the arrest of undocumented foreign nationals and drug dealers.
KZN police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi says residents must stand against alleged corruption within law enforcement agencies.
“In the area you are talking about at Point police station, there are a number of police officers that have been subjected to departmental cases, and there are a lot of officers that were arrested and charged for being associated or being involved in the wrong things that are happening in that area.” Mkhwanazi said.
He says if you see something, say something.
“When you see police officers engaging with communities sitting in a vehicle, a community member comes and leans against the police car. We don’t encourage such behavior. If a police officer is going to engage with the community, they must get out of the car and be able to engage with a person face-to-face.” He added,
The commissioner recently raised concerns about police officers being arrested for committing crimes using state resources, including their standard-issue firearms.
