Knysna Mayor Aims to Avert Day Zero Water Restrictions

Africa-Press – South-Africa. Knysna mayor Thando Matika says every effort is being made to prevent the town from reaching “day zero” water restrictions.

The municipality declared level four water restrictions about a month ago, after severe drought and below-average rainfall, which left dam levels critically low.

Matika says increased seasonal water demand during the holiday period has worsened the situation.

“The situation is very serious, but we are under active management. Our storage dams and river abstractions are under pressure because of inflows that remain low. However, I want to reassure the residents that the water is still flowing and we are not yet on day zero.”

Matika says Knysna residents are doing their part to save water.

“Our residents are making all means to ensure that people are saving water. They are preventing water leakage daily, but our ageing infrastructure is not assisting the municipality.”

The municipality has also met with tourism stakeholders to ensure visitors comply with the water restrictions.
