Africa-Press – South-Africa. The Western Cape health and wellness department said it’s hospitals and emergency centres are experiencing significant pressure this festive season.
Since December last year to the 2nd of January, the province’s emergency centres made more than 74,300 admissions.
These included 18,600 trauma cases and 52,200 medical admissions.
Chief operating officer for the Western Cape department of health and wellness department Doctor Saadiq Kariem said “our emergency centres were also extremely busy during New Year’s Day with 3989 admissions which included 1378 trauma cases and 2464 medical admissions.”
Meanwhile, Department head Doctor Keith Cloete has urged the public only to visit emergency centres for actual emergencies and to expect extended waiting times.
“There are service pressures across all of our hospitals and emergency centres since New Year’s Eve and the festive season. Patients that are ill because of chronic medical conditions are adding to the normal expected trauma conditions this time of the year,” said Cloete.
