Sibiya fields tough questions about work of PKTT

Africa-Press – South-Africa. Suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya found himself in the firing line at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.

Sibiya was accused of attempting to attack the integrity of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) by claiming they were ineffective in their work.

However, commissioners lashed out at Sibiya and highlighted flaws in his arguments.

He was grilled about his view of the PKTT, accusing the team of not being as successful as many were led to believe.

Sibiya claimed certain cases investigated by the team were not within its mandate, but he was quickly corrected and rectified that the cases he referred to were parallel matters related to political killings and therefore within the PKTT’s scope of work.

Evidence leader Advocate Adila Hassim accused Sibiya of being hell-bent on tarnishing the work of the team.

“What you’re saying now is actually absolutely incorrect and it’s gratuitous because you are intent on attacking the work of this task team.”

Sibiya dismissed claims that he was on the offensive.

“In my capacity as the deputy national commissioner responsible for detectives, being given the instruction by the national commissioner to get involved and do 1,2,3,4 – at a later stage it gets turned into like I’m attacking the PKTT.”

Sibiya concluded his testimony and will resume on Monday.
