Mkhwanazi: Mchunu was 'captured' to disband PKTT

Africa-Press – South-Africa. KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi says he was convinced that Minister Senzo Mchunu had been “captured” and influenced when he issued the directive to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

Mkhwanazi also alleged that there was a corrupt relationship between North West businessman Brown Mogotsi and Mchunu, who is currently on special leave.

Mkhwanazi was giving his closing evidence before the Parliamentary ad hoc committee investigating allegations of police corruption and stood by his earlier evidence about Mchunu.

Mkhwanazi doubled down on his initial claims that Mchunu’s decision to disband the PKTT was not his decision alone.

He said Mchunu and other politicians, whom he did not mention, were corrupt and victims of outside influence.

Mkhwanazi was asked whether he believed Mchunu and Brown Mogotsi had a corrupt relationship by evidence leader Norman Arendse.

Arendse asked: “A potentially corrupt relationship existed between alleged associate of the Minister of Police named as Brown Mogotsi and the Minister of Police. Is that still your view?”

Mkhwanazi replied: “That is correct.”

Mkhwanazi further submitted that Mchunu was doing someone else’s bidding when he issued his directive.

“I believe, I’m still saying here, that Minister Mchunu was captured to end up writing that letter.”

Mkhwanazi also said Mchunu had erased key messages on his government-issued devices, but they were able to retrieve the information.
