Young Sibusiso Dyonase Challenges CoCT Mayor for DA

Africa-Press – South-Africa. Up until Tuesday, Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis was the only candidate in the running for the position of Federal Leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA).

But now a relatively unknown contender is stepping up to challenge Hill-Lewis for the top job in the party.

Sibusiso Dyonase, currently a caucus leader in Sedibeng, has thrown his hat into the ring.

On his Facebook bio, he refers to himself as a ‘Future president, Dreamer and Activist’, but does he have what it takes to take over at the helm from outgoing John Steenhuisen?

Speaking to CapeTalk’s Lester Kiewit, he explains that his journey with the party began 15 years ago after he matriculated.

“I needed something to do because I couldn’t go to university due to financial challenges. At 19, I was elected a branch chairperson of Ward 8 in Midvaal, and that really has shaped my grassroots activism.”

He adds that, while he may not have the same national profile as Hill-Lewis, he has years of work within the party and municipal leadership to stand him in good stead.

“I am serious. I joined this campaign because I believe in democracy and I believe in freedom of choice.”

Dyonase believes the party needs to reconnect with communities on the ground.

“I don’t think the DA needs any colour of any leader, they need someone who is going to be capable, someone who is going to be relatable and someone who is going to be accountable. I don’t think race in this day and age is still a valid argument.

The contest comes ahead of the party’s elective federal congress in April; the DA says it looks forward to a ‘robust’ campaigning period.
