Africa-Press – South-Africa. Following the precautionary suspension of its vice-chancellor, the University of Fort Hare (UFH) said it will now focus on instituting disciplinary action related to a string of governance issues.

On Tuesday, the institution placed Professor Sakhela Buhlungu on suspension after a forensic investigation found irregularities with the appointment of two executive directors.

The university maintains that the suspension is an interim measure and not a guilty finding on his part.

The decision follows a council meeting held on Monday, where the findings of the forensic probe were considered.

The investigation found that four senior management members, including Buhlungu, failed to comply with governance procedures as set out in the university’s statute.

The university’s council said Buhlungu was informed of the findings and allowed to make representations before a final decision was taken.

Following consideration of his response, the council resolved to institute disciplinary proceedings, with the suspension remaining in place pending the outcome.

In the interim, Doctor Nthabi Taole-Mjimba has been appointed as acting vice-chancellor.

The university has acknowledged that the development may cause concern among staff and students, but said measures are in place to ensure stability and continuity of operations.
