{"id":10766,"date":"2021-05-21T17:16:08","date_gmt":"2021-05-21T17:16:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/?p=10766"},"modified":"2021-05-21T17:07:03","modified_gmt":"2021-05-21T17:07:03","slug":"eskom-unions-square-off-over-wage-negotiations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/eskom-unions-square-off-over-wage-negotiations","title":{"rendered":"Eskom, unions square off over wage negotiations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\">South-Africa<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Cape Town \u2013 The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) are not backing down in their demand for a 15% wage hike at Eskom.<\/p>\n<p>This is after Eskom said it was not in a position to offer the wage increases of 15% and tabled an offer of 1.5%.<\/p>\n<p>The power utility said it was expecting to incur a loss of R15 billion this year.<\/p>\n<p>Eskom has been suffering losses in the past few years as it battles load shedding and governance issues in the past.<\/p>\n<p>But the unions said they stood by their demands of 15% increases and housing allowance hikes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of our core demands is a 15% wage increase but Eskom has offered only 1.5%.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when one analyses the offer it is clear that this is a section 189 restructuring process under the guise of wage talks, because the measly 1.5% increase which Eskom is offering is conditional upon workers accepting changes to their benefits and conditions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe reject this with the contempt it deserves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are also demanding an increase in housing allowance, and the closing of the apartheid wage gap.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe demand an increase in maternity leave from 5 months and 7 days to 6 months and other improvements on conditions of service,\u201d said the NUM and Numsa in a joint statement.<\/p>\n<p>[email protected]<\/p>\n<p><b>Political Bureau<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; South-Africa.
