{"id":11967,"date":"2021-06-10T18:02:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-10T18:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/?p=11967"},"modified":"2021-06-10T16:49:19","modified_gmt":"2021-06-10T16:49:19","slug":"ramaphosa-lifts-power-generation-licence-threshold-to-reduce-load-shedding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/ramaphosa-lifts-power-generation-licence-threshold-to-reduce-load-shedding","title":{"rendered":"Ramaphosa lifts power generation licence threshold to reduce load shedding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\">South-Africa<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Cape Town &#8211; President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced an increase in the licence threshold for people to generate power from 1MW to 100MW to lift the economy.<\/p>\n<p>Ramaphosa on Thursday announced that they were increasing the Nersa licensing threshold for embedded generation projects from 1MW to 100MW.<\/p>\n<p>This comes after Eskom implemented load shedding in the past few days.<\/p>\n<p>Ramaphosa said they will boost the economy and enable the country to have energy security.<\/p>\n<p>He denied they were taking the bread from Eskom\u2019s mouth, saying the power utility needed competition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough some will argue we are taking bread out of Eskom\u2019s mouth, no we are not,\u201d said Ramaphosa.<\/p>\n<p>The country has been in the middle of load shedding during the past week as generation units continue to lose power.<\/p>\n<p>Ramaphosa said this was important to reduce the impact of load shedding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFollowing an extensive public consultation process and a significant amount of technical work undertaken by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, we will be amending schedule 2 of the Electricity Regulation Act to increase the Nersa licensing threshold for embedded generation projects from 1MW to 100MW.<\/p>\n<p>This intervention reflects our determination to take the necessary action to achieve energy security and reduce the impact of load shedding on businesses and households across the country,\u201d said Ramaphosa.<\/p>\n<p>He said the country needed energy security if South Africa wanted to grow the economy.<\/p>\n<p>[email protected]<\/p>\n<p><b>Political Bureau<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; South-Africa.
