{"id":1641,"date":"2020-12-31T19:38:42","date_gmt":"2020-12-31T19:38:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/south-africa\/?p=1641"},"modified":"2020-12-31T17:31:52","modified_gmt":"2020-12-31T17:31:52","slug":"city-optimistic-about-future-of-cape-town-tourism-despite-level-3-restrictions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/city-optimistic-about-future-of-cape-town-tourism-despite-level-3-restrictions","title":{"rendered":"City optimistic about future of Cape Town tourism despite level 3 restrictions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/south-africa\">South-Africa<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>Cape Town &#8211; The City of Cape Town has called on on locals and visitors to take responsibility to stop the spread of Covid-19 in order to keep Cape Town\u2019s visitor economy healthy.<\/p>\n<p>Mayco Member for Economic Opportunities and Asset Management, James Vos said that the tourist economy could suffer ever worse long term damage if steps aren\u2019t taken now to adhere to the lockdown level 3 restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe now find ourselves in the peak tourism period with large numbers of people visiting our city&#8217;s attractions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is that if we don\u2019t all take the necessary measures now to contain this health crisis, the visitor economy could suffer even worse long term damage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe realise that these new restrictions make it difficult for some establishments to operate sustainably, but if we all do our part in reducing the spread of the virus over the next few weeks, these could possibly be lifted,\u201d Vos said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe visitor economy is everyone&#8217;s business. Tourism is the economic lifeline for many businesses in Cape Town and supports thousands of jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He called on everyone to do their part to stop the spread of Covid-19 so that the economy can remain open for business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we all work together, we can do wonderful things. We&#8217;ve done this before when we faced Day Zero and we can do it again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn this way, tourism can help bring about economic recovery, just like many times before,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe safety of our people and our tourists must be our priority. Our shared goal must be to flatten the Covid-19 curve urgently, so that these new restrictions can be lifted and we can once again focus on rebuilding this vital industry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said the recently established Tourism Task Team, whose aim is to get industry through these tough times while also focusing on our future prospects, are constantly implementing measures to drive the various stages of recovery and readiness.<\/p>\n<p>The task team is also using campaigns to stimulate supply and demand for specific key source markets such as domestic and international travel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI trust that these initiatives will help tourism flourish in the challenging weeks and months ahead, within the framework of strict Covid-19 protocols.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to ensure continued compliance of all Covid-19 protocols across the tourism value chain for the safety of our visitors and locals as well as employees and clients,\u201d Vos said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow more than ever we must pull together and keep each other safe.
