Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>Three tourists from the Netherlands were among five people who died after three vehicles collided in Mpumalanga on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The crash happened on the N4 near Schoemanskloof towards Mbombela.<\/p>\n

Reports indicated that a truck and a minibus taxi were involved in a sideswipe collision at high speed. The truck was then said to have collided head-on with a bakkie travelling in the opposite direction.<\/p>\n

Moeti Mmusi of the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, said three of the occupants in the minibus taxi – tourists from the Netherlands – had died at the scene alongside their driver, a local man, as well as the driver of the bakkie.<\/p>\n

“The victims died at the crash scene. Three [other] people, two of whom were in the taxi were seriously injured. The driver of the truck is among those who were seriously injured.”<\/p>\n

Mmusi said the cause of the crash had not yet been determined and further investigations were being conducted.<\/p>\n

“Various ambulances responded and the injured were all rushed to nearby hospitals; the cause of the crash is still unclear and the investigation into it is already under way,” Mmusi said<\/p>\n

The accident had added to the alarming number of people that had died on Mpumalanga roads recently.<\/p>\n

Mmusi recently stated that 69 people had died on Mpumalanga roads in February.<\/p>\n

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe also highlighted the issue.<\/p>\n

“We must all play our part in curbing these crashes. Our roads must not be turned into killing fields by reckless drivers. Motorists should respect the rules of the road and exercise required diligence when they are behind the steering wheel.”<\/p>\n
