fines, to the tune of more than R7 million, from 28 February to 6 March.<\/p>\n

Over the one-week period, authorities held 164<\/p>\n

integrated roadblocks, vehicle checkpoints and speed control operations across<\/p>\n

the province, stopping and checking 38 156 vehicles.<\/p>\n

69 people lost their lives on Mpumalanga’s roads in<\/p>\n

February<\/p>\n

Sixteen vehicles were impounded and more than 100<\/p>\n

were declared unroadworthy.<\/p>\n

Provincial Department of Transport and Public Works<\/p>\n

spokesperson Jandr\u00e9 Bakker said that speeding remained a concern.<\/p>\n

“The faster you drive, the less time you have<\/p>\n

to respond to an emergency and the more space you need to stop to avoid a<\/p>\n

crash. Speeding is irresponsible and dangerous,” Bakker said.<\/p>\n

Twenty-four crashes occurred in the period, and 24<\/p>\n

fatalities were recorded. Of those, 15 were pedestrians, five were drivers, and<\/p>\n

two were motorcyclists.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, 49 arrests were made and 21 of them were<\/p>\n

for driving under the influence of alcohol.<\/p>\n

Eight people were arrested for the possession of<\/p>\n

fraudulent documentation, three for trying to bribe officers, and five for<\/p>\n

overloading.<\/p>\n

Bakker added:<\/p>\n

Acting director for traffic law enforcement, Vigie<\/p>\n

Chetty, said around-the-clock traffic law enforcement efforts and safety<\/p>\n

campaign activities would continue across the province.<\/p>\n

“We appeal to all road users to be considerate<\/p>\n

and comply with the law. How we behave on the roads affects our safety and the<\/p>\n

safety of every other person on the road,” she added.<\/p>\n
