Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>A Limpopo pensioner has been arrested for allegedly shooting at a couple who was fishing. The man was allegedly attempting to shoot hippos in the river where the couple was fishing.<\/p>\n

The 77-year-old man was arrested in Lephalale on Tuesday afternoon after he allegedly “fired shots in the direction of the couple that was fishing” along the Mogol River, said police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mamphaswa Seabi.<\/p>\n

“The arrested suspect alleged that he was shooting at the animals (hippopotamuses). Police seized two rifles, one revolver, one pistol, and two airguns during the arrest,” said Seabi.<\/p>\n

During the incident, a 38-year-old woman sustained a gunshot wound and was taken to hospital.<\/p>\n

“Her partner managed to hide, and he immediately informed the police and emergency services,” said Seabi.<\/p>\n

Police have opened cases of attempted murder.<\/p>\n

Limpopo police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has called on residents to be responsible while handling firearms. Hadebe has also called on those affected by this incident to stay calm and afford the police space to do their investigation.<\/p>\n

The pensioner is expected to appear in the Lephalale Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.<\/p>\n
