{"id":3246,"date":"2021-01-27T20:23:30","date_gmt":"2021-01-27T20:23:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/?p=3246"},"modified":"2021-01-27T17:32:43","modified_gmt":"2021-01-27T17:32:43","slug":"sa-is-looking-to-a-future-without-an-eskom-monopoly-over-countrys-energy-supply","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\/all-news\/sa-is-looking-to-a-future-without-an-eskom-monopoly-over-countrys-energy-supply","title":{"rendered":"SA is looking to a future without an Eskom monopoly over country\u2019s energy supply"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/\">Africa-Press<\/a> &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/south-africa\">South-Africa<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>JOHANNESBURG &#8211; PRESIDENT Cyril Ramaphosa yesterday said that South Africa was working towards breaking Eskom\u2019s monopoly over energy supply in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Ramaphosa told the virtual World Economic Forum (WEF) Davis Dialogues that he was in the process of roping in private players in the industry and allowing local municipalities to generate their own electricity.<\/p>\n<p>He said the move would allow the government to rapidly expand its energy generation capacity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis will be done with a focus on significantly increasing the contribution of renewable energy, battery storage and gas technologies,\u201d Ramaphosa said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese measures aim to bring on an additional 23 percent of generation capacity into the system by 2022.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy Gwede Mantashe has previously indicated a softening of the government policy, saying those municipalities in \u201cgood financial standing\u201d would be allowed to develop their own power generation capacity.<\/p>\n<p>Eskom commands a substantial market share of South Africa\u2019s energy demand as it supplies about 95 percent of the country\u2019s electricity supply.<\/p>\n<p>The utility is currently struggling to meet the country\u2019s energy demand due to the ageing infrastructure, while it is also laden with a mounting debt north of R480 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Its failure to meet the country\u2019s energy demand and erratic power cuts have been cited as South Africa\u2019s biggest threat to economic growth.<\/p>\n<p>Ramaphosa said efforts to restructure Eskom by splitting the company into three parts \u2013 generation, transmission and distribution \u2013 had gained momentum.<\/p>\n<p>He said this would enable a more competitive, sustainable and efficient energy system.<\/p>\n<p>However, Greenpeace Africa criticised Ramaphosa for \u201cpeddling 20th century solutions to 21st century problems\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Greenpeace climate and energy campaign manager Happy Khambule said Ramaphosa and other world leaders needed to show that they had the courage to change a system that was actively working against the planet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe president\u2019s address should have given clear commitment to achieve a rapid just transition away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy,\u201d Khambule said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA diverse energy mix is not a move away from fossil fuels, on which South Africa is still dependent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Intellidex\u2019s Peter Attard Montalto said the government should liberalise the energy sector to allow the private sector in.<\/p>\n<p>Attard Montalto said the problem was that social partners were all quite content with tick-box policymaking, supposing that the Integrated Resource Plan 2019 would solve all problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is far from accurate.
