Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>A Cape Town man was arrested for allegedly stealing money meant to be sent back to the SA Social Security Agency (Sassa).<\/p>\n

The money had not been claimed at the Post Office by the recipients.<\/p>\n

Western Cape police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk said investigators arrested the man for theft, fraud, perjury and forgery at a Post Office in Bishop Lavis on Monday.<\/p>\n

The man, who managed the day-to-day administration, noticed that approved recipients had not collected a total of R200 000 in May.<\/p>\n

The money was supposed to be returned to the Post Office bank account, via a private security company.<\/p>\n

The man was required to complete a deposit slip and a collection slip, and then endorse it in the relevant register, to show the money was taken to the bank.<\/p>\n

“It is alleged the suspect made forged entries into these registers, indicating the funds were indeed collected by the security company and deposited into the Post Office bank account, whereas this was not done,” said Van Wyk.<\/p>\n

Investigators also picked up another similar case, involving R500 000, and it is being investigated.<\/p>\n

The man appeared in court on Tuesday to face the charges.<\/p>\n

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said Cole Lee Fortuin’s case was postponed to 29 September.<\/p>\n
