Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>The ANC in the embattled Mangaung region in the Free State plans to expel eight councillors who voted with their “conscience” in a council motion over ghost workers.<\/p>\n

The ANC regional disciplinary committee (RDC) found the eight councillors guilty of gross misconduct. The committee said they were no longer fit to be members of the ANC.<\/p>\n

“With immediate effect, they must be expelled from the organisation,” the recommendation of the committee read.<\/p>\n

The councillors, including council speaker Stephani Lockman-Naidoo, had supported a motion by opposition political parties which sought to have a senior manager suspended over the municipality’s “ghost worker” saga.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the metro was found to have spent millions of rands on ghost workers.<\/p>\n

The council motion was brought in March, and the ANC caucus had been informed not to support it.<\/p>\n

However, eight ANC councillors decided they would vote with their conscience on the matter.<\/p>\n

The ANC members facing expulsion include Chabeli Rampai, Mapaseka Mothibi Nkoane, Lockman-Naidoo, council speaker Patrick Monyakoane, Puseletso Seleke, Mpho Mokoakoa, Lelala Makoa, and Lehlohonolo Moqolo.<\/p>\n

The ANC’s interim regional committee (IRC) laid charges against the members with the RDC.<\/p>\n

The sanction issued is one of the harshest.<\/p>\n

The RDC said none of the members had appeared before it to oppose the charges despite notices calling for their submissions.<\/p>\n

IRC spokesperson Ncamile Nxangisa told News24 on Tuesday that the region would hold a meeting on Wednesday and adopt the RDC report.<\/p>\n

He said the region would follow through with the expulsions, and members would have to appeal the sanction at ANC’s national disciplinary committee.<\/p>\n

Divisions in the ANC and a crisis in the municipality have plagued the Mangaung region.<\/p>\n

Last month, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma outlined details of a turnaround strategy for the municipality.<\/p>\n

The municipality was placed under administration.<\/p>\n
