Their lawyer, Yousha Tayob, confirmed that the twins had been released on parole on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The brothers, who were linked to the Islamic State (ISIS) group, were accused of planning attacks on the US embassy and Jewish institutions in South Africa, News24 previously reported.<\/p>\n

Thulsie twins to have time spent in custody while awaiting trial deducted from sentences<\/p>\n

A Hawks investigation revealed that the twins conspired with a man known as Abu Harb to perform acts of terrorism in South Africa.<\/p>\n

They were sentenced in the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg in February, after reaching a plea agreement with the State.<\/p>\n

They were sentenced to five years’ imprisonment each for attempting to leave South Africa to join ISIS in Syria. Brandon-Lee was sentenced to a further three years’ imprisonment for possession of a Mujahid guide \u2013 a document “connected to terrorist activities” \u2013 and Tony-Lee was sentenced to a further six years’ imprisonment for conspiring with Harb.<\/p>\n

Department of Correctional Services spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo said because the warrants were backdated to the date of arrest and the time spent while awaiting trial was regarded as time served, Brandon-Lee’s minimum detention period ended on 8 July 2020, while Tony-Lee’s was 5 January 2022.<\/p>\n

Nxumalo said:<\/p>\n

The Daily Maverick reported that in exchange for the plea agreements, the State withdrew other charges against the twins, such as financing terrorist activities and soliciting support for a terrorist organisation.<\/p>\n

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and Department of Correctional Services had not commented by the time of publication.<\/p>\n
