Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>City of Johannesburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse will survive Wednesday’s special council sitting of the City’s multiparty government.<\/p>\n

This is despite opposition parties in the council earlier saying they would vote against her in a motion of no confidence at the next council sitting.<\/p>\n

Mayoral spokesperson Mabine Seabe said the only topic on the agenda of the sitting was the election of a new speaker.<\/p>\n

The election will be held to replace Vasco da Gama, who was ousted in a motion of no confidence at the beginning of September.<\/p>\n

Joburg Mayor Mpho Phalatse threatened with removal, coalition lays criminal charges<\/p>\n

The ordinary sitting of the council, set for Wednesday and Thursday, has been postponed until a speaker has been elected. The speaker will take over from the city manager once elected.<\/p>\n

On 5 September, Al Jama-ah member Thapelo Amad announced that opposition parties in the coalition were planning a motion of no confidence in the mayor.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Amad said parties had met and resubmitted a motion of no confidence in Phalatse.<\/p>\n

He said once elected, the speaker would make a determination on whether to call a special council sitting.<\/p>\n
