Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>Suspended Pretoria chief magistrate Desmond Nair will be making representations as to why he should not be prosecuted on a corruption charge after allegedly accepting a bribe from services company African Global Operations, formerly known as Bosasa.<\/p>\n

Nair, who has spent most of his career looking down at the dock, found himself in the hot seat at the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Monday morning.<\/p>\n

Nair’s lawyer, advocate Danie Do\u0308rfling, told the court they would be making representations as to why his client should not be prosecuted.<\/p>\n

He placed it on record that the representations would be submitted to the National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) by 16 November.<\/p>\n

Do\u0308rfling said the NDPP was expected to make a decision and communicate said decision by 2 December.<\/p>\n

The case was subsequently postponed to 7 December, and Nair was warned to appear in court.<\/p>\n

Corruption charges<\/b><\/p>\n

Nair has been charged with corruption after allegedly accepting the installation of security systems valued at R200 000 at his Pretoria home, including a full electric fence, CCTV and alarm systems by Bosasa.<\/p>\n

The chief magistrate was implicated by former Bosasa employee Richard le Roux in testimony at the State Capture Inquiry.<\/p>\n

According to the charge sheet, Nair is accused of accepting a bribe from Bosasa in or near Silverton in September 2016, while he was a judicial officer and the chief magistrate of Pretoria.<\/p>\n

News24 previously reported that Nair confirmed security cameras were installed at his private residence, but said this was “pursuant to a private agreement”.<\/p>\n
