Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>A man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, or a R60 000 fine, after he pleaded guilty to the possession of more than R3 million worth of abalone.<\/p>\n

Husaini Adam, 50, appeared in the Kroonstad Regional Court on Wednesday, following his arrest on 5 July by the Hawks.<\/p>\n

This was after they received a tip-off about a person transporting abalone from the Free State to Gauteng.<\/p>\n

Free State Hawks spokesperson, Captain Christopher Singo, said officers had followed the truck and stopped it at a filling station in Kroonstad.<\/p>\n

Singo said:<\/p>\n

“The abalone, the Tata truck, including R25 000 cash which was found in possession of the suspects, were all seized,” said Singo.<\/p>\n

The court sentenced Adam to a fine of R60 000 or 10 years’ imprisonment. Half the fine or sentence was suspended for five years.<\/p>\n

The cases against Adam\u2019s co-accused \u2013 Johannes Myberg, 40; Fu Lin, 37; and Dasham Desram, 35 \u2013 were postponed to 17 December.<\/p>\n

Lin and Desram are out on R10 000 bail, while Myberg remains in custody.<\/p>\n
