Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>Nine people were wounded in shootings in Strand in the Western Cape over the weekend.<\/p>\n

On Saturday at around 22:30, five people were shot on Petunia Avenue. The motive for the shooting was unclear, but police were investigating attempted murder charges, said police spokesperson, Captain Frederick van Wyk.<\/p>\n

The victims were transported to a nearby hospital.<\/p>\n

On Sunday night, four people were shot at a house on Wildegans Road.<\/p>\n

ER24 spokesperson Ross Campbell said two of the wounded were children, aged 11 and 14, who were dropped off at the Strand Fire Department for treatment.<\/p>\n

The shooting took place during what appeared to have been an armed robbery by gangsters.<\/p>\n

“Strand police are investigating cases of attempted murder, armed robbery and malicious damage to property,” Van Wyk said about the Sunday night attack.<\/p>\n

He added:<\/p>\n

Strand Community Policing Forum (CPF) spokesperson Niklaas Thysen said the CPF and residents held a protest march against soaring crime in the area, and condemned the increase in shootings and drug use.<\/p>\n

“Shootings are on the rise at the moment due to various gangs targeting groups and territories within Broadlands Park, Arijaville, Allan Boesak and Casablanca within the Strand community,” said Thysen.<\/p>\n

He added: “The community is angered by these shootings and has called for increased police visibility, both day and night. Additionally, the community has responded by mobilising themselves to work against the criminal activities that are destroying young people’s lives.”<\/p>\n

Thysen said the Strand CPF was working closely with the police to find meaningful solutions and operational strategies to curb crime levels in the area.<\/p>\n

Three people have been arrested in connection with the shootings. Anyone with information has been requested to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.<\/p>\n
