Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>The ZF Mgcawu District Municipality in the Northern Cape says it is ready to tackle the impact of rising water levels from the Orange River system.<\/p>\n

It has introduced a contingency plan to ensure that affected residents are evacuated and have access to medical assistance in the event that the situation worsens.<\/p>\n

Municipality spokesperson Martha Manyehe said on Thursday that the plan would accommodate residents in areas in the !Kheis, Kai !Garib and Dawid Kruiper Local Municipalities.<\/p>\n

She added that the municipality introduced the plan in line with the Disaster Management Act of 2002.<\/p>\n

“The ZFM Contingency Plan addresses issues of evacuation, rapid response, and medical emergencies should these arise. Of course, we do not hope there will be a serious threat to life and property, and thus far, no loss of life or serious injury can be reported. However, with the different teams in place, we are ready to minimise and mitigate the impact of rising water levels,” she said, urging residents to avoid areas where there are high water levels.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, the water and sanitation department said heavy rain caused a significant increase in the province’s water storage levels, with the Lower Orange River system at 107.6%.<\/p>\n

Spokesperson Sputnik Ratau also cautioned against gathering in affected areas. In addition, he urged residents to use water sparingly.<\/p>\n
