Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>As the festive season drew to a close on Monday, police in Standerton shut down two shebeens, arrested a man for murder and fined people for drinking in public under the banner of Operation Vala Konke.<\/p>\n

Giving additional details, Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the first shebeen was discovered when patrolling officers noticed people congregating at a “certain premises”.<\/p>\n

“As the members drew nearer, it was discovered that the alleged owners were, in fact, running a shebeen. The place was searched [and] a large volume of liquor was found,” Mohlala said.<\/p>\n

“A 35-year-old man was arrested and he paid a fine as an admission of guilt.”<\/p>\n

“Meanwhile, the second illegal liquor outlet was closed after members discovered that a certain spaza shop was used to trade liquor. A 33-year-old man was arrested and he paid a fine as an admission of guilt,” Mohlala added. He said 319.38 litres of liquor was confiscated from the two shebeens.<\/p>\n

Officers also arrested a 39-year-old man for the murder of his girlfriend after they received information about his whereabouts in Standerton.<\/p>\n

Four other people who were arrested on charges of public drinking paid fines.<\/p>\n

Mohala added:<\/p>\n

Those who were arrested are expected to appear in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court.<\/p>\n
