Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>The Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) in KwaZulu-Natal has obtained an interim order to seize assets to the value of approximately R39 million from a Pietermaritzburg doctor for allegedly defrauding the South African Revenue Service (SARS).<\/p>\n

Dr Navind Dayanand, his wife, Nerupa Dayanand, and Daymed Private Hospital (Pty) Ltd have been charged alongside Douglas Mpofu, Carla Domenica Louden and Yagasami Ronnie Perumal.<\/p>\n

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said the State alleged that the Dayanands acted together and with others to defraud SARS.<\/p>\n

“To this effect, false Corporate Income Tax (CIT), Value Added Tax (VAT) and Personal Income Tax (PIT) returns were submitted to SARS so that the doctor and the hospital could obtain undue tax refunds and\/or not pay due taxes to the value of approximately R39 million,” Ramkisson-Kara added.<\/p>\n

The assets stipulated in the order include items from the hospital, such as furniture, vehicles, computers, as well as electrical, medical and electronic equipment, and immovable property.<\/p>\n

Ramkisson-Kara said the assets would be held by the appointed curator until the order was confirmed.<\/p>\n

The criminal case will return to court on 24 February.<\/p>\n
