Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>A 39-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the robbery of Gauteng deputy police commissioner Major-General Tommy Mthombeni.<\/p>\n

The suspect was arrested on the M1 South, Joe Slovo Drive, on Friday.<\/p>\n

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili, the suspect’s car, which is believed to have been used during the robbery while fitted with false registration numbers, was traced to Johannesburg.<\/p>\n

“The vehicle, which belongs to his girlfriend, has been seized as it was used during the commission of a crime,” Muridili added.<\/p>\n

Mthombeni was robbed of his service firearm and personal belongings in a brazen armed robbery while visiting a store in Midrand on Thursday.<\/p>\n

He was with a friend at the Link shopping centre, when he was accosted by two people who demanded that he hand over his belongings.<\/p>\n

City Press reported the gunmen stole a state-owned iPhone, a privately owned iPhone, a R3 000 watch, R2 100 in cash, a black Gucci bag and a leather belt.<\/p>\n

They also stole his passport, ID, Mercedes-Benz key, firearm and ammunition.<\/p>\n

“The 39-year-old suspect is currently on parole for robbery which was committed in Sandringham in 2007. He was released from prison in 2018,” said Muridili.<\/p>\n

He is expected to appear in court on Monday.<\/p>\n

The police are still searching for his two alleged accomplices.<\/p>\n
