Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>A 45-year-old man appeared in the East London Magistrate’s Court on Friday charged with offering to use his girlfriend, who worked at the court, to make a case go away last September.<\/p>\n

The deal was made to destroy the dockets for a pending “serious” case involving a senior official.<\/p>\n

Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, Eastern Cape Hawks spokesperson, said the suspect, Zane Bernard, allegedly wanted R1 million for the deal, and, by the time he was arrested, had allegedly already received a R250 000 down payment.<\/p>\n

According to Mgolodela, Bernard reportedly told the official that his girlfriend worked at the local magistrate’s office and knew the presiding officer on the case because they played tennis together.<\/p>\n

Bernard was arrested following an undercover investigation by the Hawks that uncovered the R250 000 down payment for the deal.<\/p>\n

A formal bail application will be heard on 9 February.<\/p>\n
