Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>A Free State police officer has allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend, before turning the gun on himself.<\/p>\n

The incident happened on Sunday at police barracks.<\/p>\n

Free State police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, said the sergeant had been attached to the Sasolburg Visible Policing Unit.<\/p>\n

He said the officer lived at the barracks next to the police station and that the incident had occurred when his 33-year-old “life partner” was visiting him.<\/p>\n

“According to the information [we have], the member shot his life partner. The member himself was found with a gunshot wound in the head and his service pistol next to him. The police opened a case of murder and [an] inquest,” said Makhele.<\/p>\n

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate had not commented at the time of publication. Their response will be added once received.<\/p>\n

Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, said she was “saddened by this incident”.<\/p>\n

She encouraged members of the police to make use of “Employee Health and Wellness” support structures, which could assist and support them in resolving domestic issues.<\/p>\n
