Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>North West Education MEC Viola Motsumi has intervened at a school that was left without sufficient classrooms for four years after a fire in 2019.<\/p>\n

Six classrooms were damaged in the fire at Tlhakajeng Primary School in Kraaipan village, near Khunwana, which community members reportedly started in protest, due to the school’s poor condition.<\/p>\n

Motsumi said the police had arrested some of the perpetrators.<\/p>\n

However, the classrooms were not replaced, prompting Motsumi to instruct provincial education officials to take urgent action to provide more classrooms.<\/p>\n

Motsumi provided four mobile classrooms as an interim measure, which will be added to the three mobile classrooms that were handed over to the school immediately after the torching.<\/p>\n

Motsumi said:<\/p>\n

“This year we are going to build them eight classrooms, an administration block and ablution facilities. Next year we are going to ensure that we improve their sporting grounds.”<\/p>\n

Motsumi urged communities to refrain from destroying public property.<\/p>\n

“I further wish to condemn those communities who embark on destroying public properties. We have a huge backlog of building schools in this province and burning them causes the department to prioritise again the same schools. I am appealing to our communities to desist from such an unfavourable act,” the MEC said.<\/p>\n
