Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>Western Cape police arrested a 44-year-old man in connection with a hit-and-run in Clanwilliam on Monday which left a cyclist in hospital.<\/p>\n

Joylyon Goeieman said he was cycling on his mountain bike down Graafwaterweg when the driver of a white Kia hit him from behind.<\/p>\n

He said the driver did not stop and allegedly sped off.<\/p>\n

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said the man was arrested on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

He will be charged with reckless and negligent driving, and is expected to appear in the Clanwilliam Magistrate’s Court.<\/p>\n

Goeieman welcomed the arrest.<\/p>\n

“Unfortunately, I am still in the hospital bed… I’ve had to undergo surgery on my left ear on Wednesday evening, and now I’m currently using crutches because the swelling of my legs is yet to go down,” Goeieman said.<\/p>\n

“Many of us cyclists have protective gear when we are out cycling, but I fear what would happen if a resident jogged down the street and had no protective gear. As much as we all try to keep safe, we cannot control what drivers do on the road.”<\/p>\n

He said he was “grateful” to be alive and to be able to talk about his experience.<\/p>\n

“I believe everything happens for a reason. Yes, I’m still in a lot of pain and recovering in the hospital, but I believe my life was saved for a purpose. And if one of that is to be the living result of a hit-and-run incident that could’ve been avoided, then so be it,” Goeieman said.<\/p>\n

He said if he was well enough, he would attend the court case.<\/p>\n

Goeieman added that he had no ill feelings towards the person responsible for the hit-and-run, but wanted them to know it was not okay to treat someone like that.<\/p>\n

“I have a little daughter who depends on me, and so easily that could’ve been taken away from her.”<\/p>\n
