Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>After his car plunged into Milnerton Lagoon in the early hours of Sunday morning, a man allegedly swam metres to safety.<\/p>\n

According to eyewitness Charmaine Warburton, it is alleged the man’s car found its way to its watery grave after being run off the road by two other drivers who were involved in illegal street racing.<\/p>\n

Warburton, who saw the incident through her bedroom window, says the car nosedived into the lagoon after being run off by the reckless drivers.<\/p>\n

\u201cFortunately, the driver (Jamie) is a fit young man who managed to get himself out of the car and swam about 20 metres to get to safety. I do not know him personally and only met on the scene, but the poor guy was traumatised,\u201d she says after immediately calling the police for assistance.<\/p>\n

Warburton, who resides opposite Marine Drive and the lagoon, says this stretch of road is notoriously known for street racing.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter midnight, cars race down Marine Drive, and nothing is being done. There are no speeding cameras on this road. I have notified the councillor and the City countless times, but my complaints just fall on deaf ears.\u201d<\/p>\n

The City of Cape Town confirmed they received the emergency call just before 01:00 on Sunday 11 June.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs per initial reports, two vehicles were involved in a collision and one of them ended up in the lagoon, close to the concrete bridge. The driver of the vehicle sustained injuries and was treated on the scene by Metro EMS personnel. The scene was handed over to the South African Police Service at 01:30 with the vehicle still in the lagoon,\u201d says Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for the City\u2019s fire service.<\/p>\n
