Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>A Cape Town school had to be evacuated on Wednesday after heavy rains and strong winds hit the Western Cape.<\/p>\n

As a result, St Paul’s Primary School, in Faure, moved the pupils to St Paul’s Anglican Church.<\/p>\n

The province is experiencing heavy rains after the South African Weather Service issued an orange level 6 warning for disruptive rain, leading to major traffic disruption and flooding.<\/p>\n

Fire and Rescue Services assisted the City’s Disaster Risk Management teams in evacuating the pupils.<\/p>\n

The spokesperson for Disaster Risk Management, Charlotte Powell, said infrastructure on the Old Faure Wine Farm in Macassar had sustained water damage, while informal settlements in Delft had been flooded.<\/p>\n

“The City has provided the residents with milling and sand. The Roads and Infrastructure Management Services and stormwater teams are unblocking drains,” Powell said.<\/p>\n

The Recreation and Parks Department is removing uprooted trees on public land and roadways across the city.<\/p>\n

The animal shelter, Change for the Better Foundation, in Brackenfell, sustained water damage.<\/p>\n

The impact of Tuesday night and Wednesday morning’s rain caused the Jakkalsvlei Canal to burst its banks, as well as the Lourens River and the Kayser River.<\/p>\n

With the rivers bursting its banks, it led to flooding at the Johnson and Johnson factory in Tokai, and impacted an Eskom sub-station in Somerset West.<\/p>\n

The City and Eskom are still working to restore power in the Helderberg area.<\/p>\n

Kay’s Caravan Park in Strand was evacuated. Help-n-Hand, a non-governmental organisation, is accommodating residents.<\/p>\n

Various informal settlements in Philippi, Strand, Gugulethu, Mfuleni, Masiphumelele and Khayelitsha were flooded.<\/p>\n
