Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>A high-speed chase through the streets of Nelson Mandela Bay on Thursday ended in a car crash when the suspected robbers crashed into a boundary wall, bringing an end to a 24-hour crime spree.<\/p>\n

Several robberies were reported across the city since Wednesday and members of the police task team, accompanied by the K9-Unit, managed to locate and pursue three people fleeing in a VW Polo through Sydenham, Sidwell and New Brighton at a high speed.<\/p>\n

The chase lasted approximately 10 minutes and came to an end when the Polo veered across a railway line and crashed into a boundary wall in New Brighton.<\/p>\n

Police spokesperson Captain Andre\u0301 Beetge said reports were received about several street robberies taking place in the Humewood and Mount Road areas since Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The victims identified the getaway car of the perpetrators as a VW Polo, with no registration plates.<\/p>\n

The three men were allegedly driving around, robbing people of their cellphones and other valuable items.<\/p>\n

On Thursday morning, the Polo was spotted by police patrolling the M4 Highway.<\/p>\n

Beetge said, after the crash, the three individuals got out of the car and tried to flee.<\/p>\n

But two were arrested by the task team and the other was apprehended by the K9-Unit.<\/p>\n

“The three suspects, aged 20, 21 and 25 years, were detained and several cellphones and personal items, believed to be stolen property, were confiscated. The vehicle was also confiscated and will form part of the investigation.<\/p>\n

“A replica firearm believed to have been used to commit the robberies was also found in the vehicle,” Beetge said.<\/p>\n

The three are set to appear in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court on Monday.<\/p>\n

The police are busy probing a possible link to several similar cases in the metro.<\/p>\n
