Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>Two tourists have died following a canoeing accident on the Crocodile River near the Hartbeespoort Dam.<\/p>\n

According to National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) spokesperson Craig Lambinon, the tourists were canoeing on the river just before 15:00 on Sunday when the accident happened.<\/p>\n

He said 20 tourists from Singapore and six local river guides had been on a river expedition when four of the canoes carrying eight tourists capsized.<\/p>\n

“NSRI Hartbeespoort Dam rescue swimmers, NSRI Hartbeespoort Dam medics, SRU rescue medics, police and a paramedics from the Lion Park responded.” Lambinon said.<\/p>\n

“The six river guides were assisting, and they were reporting that CPR efforts had been commenced on one male tourist and one female tourist.<\/p>\n

“Despite extensive resuscitation efforts, the man and woman could not be revived. Six tourists and two river guides were rescued from the water.<\/p>\n

“The two river guides were unconscious and medical treatment was provided by paramedics to the two river guides and to six of the tourists. The two river guides were stabilised by paramedics and transported to hospital where they are recovering.”<\/p>\n

The six injured tourists were treated on the scene, Lambinon added.<\/p>\n

“The tour operator is assisting the tourists and families of those affected in cooperation with the authorities. Police have opened an inquest docket.”<\/p>\n

“Condolences are conveyed to the families and friends of the deceased. Our thoughts are with all involved in this difficult time.”<\/p>\n
