Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>A Northern Cape mine owner is accused of swindling a UK investor out of R147 million after allegedly convincing him to invest in a mining business.<\/p>\n

Christopher David Kimber, 62, handed himself to the Hawks on Wednesday and appeared in the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on the same day.<\/p>\n

Northern Cape Hawks spokesperson Captain Bonnie Nxumalo said Kimber faces charges of fraud and money laundering, and was released on R100 000 bail.<\/p>\n

“It is alleged that in 2013, Kimber, who owns mines in the Northern Cape, met with a businessman from the United Kingdom over an investment of buying 50% shares of his businesses,” Nxumalo said.<\/p>\n

“The businessman reportedly paid R147 million into Kimber\u2019s bank account, but the money was transferred into personal bank accounts, thus, no investment was made.”<\/p>\n

When the businessman realised that no investment had been made, he reported the matter to the police, Nxumalo said, adding that the Hawks then conducted an investigation which led to Kimber’s arrest.<\/p>\n

He is expected to appear in court again on 17 August.<\/p>\n
