Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>Johannesburg’s Nelson Mandela Bridge is closed for maintenance on Mandela’s special day.<\/p>\n

The Joburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) announced the bridge’s closure for maintenance and cleaning on Tuesday and Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The bridge in Braamfontein will be closed off at the Bertha Street intersection and the Ntemi Piliso Street and Carr Street intersections.<\/p>\n

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the bridge was closed to vehicles but would be accessible to pedestrians.<\/p>\n

Fihla urged motorists to be patient during the maintenance and to use the Queen Elizabeth Bridge and the Biccard Street Bridge instead.<\/p>\n

The Mandela Bridge, which was built in 1993 in recognition of the late statesman, links Braamfontein to the inner city.<\/p>\n

Mandela was born on 18 July 1918. In November 2009, the United Nations declared his birthday International Nelson Mandela Day.<\/p>\n

On this day, people are encouraged to spend 67 minutes – a minute for every year Mandela spent in public service – to help humanity in some way.<\/p>\n
