Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>Former deputy international relations minister Luwellyn Landers has died.<\/p>\n

The circumstances surrounding his death were still unclear at the time of publication.On Saturday minister of international relations and co-operation Naledi Pandor expressed her profound sadness at Landers’s death.<\/p>\n

\u201cLanders served as deputy minister of international relations and co-operation between the years 2014 and 2019. He was first elected to parliament in 1994 and served on various parliamentary committees,\u201d Pandor said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn behalf of Mr Landers\u2019 former colleagues in parliament, the staff at Dirco and the diplomatic community at large, I offer my condolences to the family, friends and comrades of Mr Landers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pandor added that Landers had served parliament and the government with diligence.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr Landers\u2019 experience as a lawmaker and a leader in the public service will be sorely missed.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the government website, Landers was deputy minister of international relations and co-operation from May 2014 to May 2019. \u201cGrowing up during the apartheid years, it was inevitable that Mr Landers, like many other students, would be strongly affected by the political situation, which was an ever-present concern, particularly in view of the events of 1976.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr Landers was a member of the Labour Party in the tricameral parliament was also the chairperson of the Labour Party, under the late Allan Hendrickse. In the 1980s, he served as deputy minister in the National Party cabinet of then President PW Botha,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n

Landers was one of several Labour Party MPs to join the ANC in September 1993, shortly before the April 1994 general election.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn 1994, he was elected as an ANC member to the National Assembly. He was chosen as a delegate to the negotiating council that settled the final constitution and presented it to the Constitutional Court.<\/p>\n

\u201cThroughout his time in parliament, he served on various parliamentary committees, including the joint standing committee on intelligence, portfolio committee on justice and constitutional development, National Assembly rules committee, the joint rules committee and ad hoc committees.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lunga Ngqengelele, a spokesperson for Dirco, told TimesLIVE the circumstances surrounding Landers\u2019 death were still unclear.<\/p>\n
