Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>The government has added an extra R10.4bn to its original spending plans announced in February, including an extra R3.5bn for the deployment of South African soldiers in the war-torn east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).<\/p>\n

This is according to the medium-termbudgetpolicystatement tabled by finance minister Enoch Godongwana in parliament on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

President Cyril Ramaphosa told parliament this week the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) presence in the DRC as part of the SADC peacekeeping mission would be extended.<\/p>\n

Despite the mission being criticised in parliament by the DA and ActionSA, who decry the deployment of \u201cill-equipped\u201d SANDF troops and \u201cdeplorable living conditions\u201d, Ramaphosa said 1,198 troops would remain on the ground until December 20.<\/p>\n

In his \u201cin-year spending adjustments,\u201d Godongwana also allocated R96m to government\u2019s legal fees related to its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.<\/p>\n

An amount of R2.1bn has been allocated to \u201cunforeseeable and unavoidable expenditure\u201d or contingency category to deal with the effect of natural disasters.<\/p>\n

Godongwana has also set aside funds to repay the debt incurred by national roads agency Sanral for the Gauteng freeway improvement project, generally referred to as the e-toll system.<\/p>\n
