Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>The City of Tshwane said it\u2019s close to securing an out-of-court settlement with Eskom on its almost R7 billion debt.<\/p>\n

The capital city owes the power utility about R5 billion in historical debt and over R1 billion in current debt.<\/p>\n

Eskom has instituted legal proceedings to recoup the monies from the municipality.<\/p>\n

In September, Eskom attached the bank accounts of Emfuleni Municipality after it failed to pay back its R8 billion debt to the power utility.<\/p>\n

At a media briefing on Wednesday, Tshwane Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya said the city had proposed a payment plan to Eskom.<\/p>\n

“The city is now in a position to service its current debt to Eskom while reducing arrears. In light of this, we have had productive discussions with the minister of electricity and energy, and the discussions are gearing towards laying the grounds for a possible out-of-court settlement regarding the R6.76 billion we owe Eskom. This is among our top priorities.”<\/p>\n
