Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>The Mother City is marking its annual remembrance ceremony on Sunday to honour the South African soldiers who died during World War I and II.<\/p>\n

The ceremony was held at the Cenotaph – a war memorial on Heerengracht Street in the Cape Town CBD.<\/p>\n

More than 7,000 of the 250,000 young South African men, who enlisted to fight in the world wars never returned home.<\/p>\n

When delivering the keynote address, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis reflected on the young men\u2019s sacrifice, describing them as courageous.<\/p>\n

“It is hard to understand or fathom how, with all of the living memory of all of the reminders that we have, of the horror and fire of war, that we find ourselves so frequently facing it again in our world today.<\/p>\n

“Today, various parts of the world are in great peril once more. From the devastation in Ukraine to the devastation of Gaza.”<\/p>\n
