Africa-Press<\/a> – South-Africa<\/a>. <\/strong><\/span>CAPE TOWN – Former Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) national chairperson, Dr Frank Mdlalose, who died from Covid-19 was an outstanding servant of South Africa, IFP founder, Inkosi Mangosuthu Buthelezi said on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe extend our condolences to his daughter, Ms Makhosazana Mdlalose, and to his wife who is currently in hospital fighting this virus. We pray for her and we wish her strength,\u201d Buthelezi said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDr Frank Mdlalose was an outstanding servant of South Africa. As one of the first members of Inkatha, he quickly showed his leadership qualities and his ability to ignite a vision in our people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buthelezi made the announcement in a statement on Sunday.<\/p>\n

He said Mdlalose served in the former KwaZulu-Natal government in the interior and health departments.<\/p>\n

\u201cDuring the constitutional negotiations, he became one of the IFP\u2019s main negotiators, and was our country\u2019s champion for federalism and the creation of provinces,\u201d Buthelezi said.<\/p>\n

He said in 1994 Mdlalose was appointed as the first premier of the province and he held both positions until ill health forced him to relinquish these positions.<\/p>\n

Mdlalose was appointed as South Africa\u2019s ambassador to Egypt, Buthelezi said a position he served with distinction.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am grateful to have served our country alongside a leader of his calibre, and to have maintained a friendship with him long after our political work together ended.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe remained close, exchanging correspondence regularly. I thank the Lord for the opportunity to see one another just six months ago,\u201d Buthelezi said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe IFP gives thanks for the life of Dr Frank Mdlalose. May his family be comforted in this difficult time, and may this great patriot rest in peace.\u201d<\/p>\n

Democratic Alliance (DA) leader in KwaZulu-Natal Francois Rodgers sent condolences to Mdlalose\u2019s family.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe DA enjoyed a good working relationship with Mdlalose, during his time as the premier because he strived to include all parties in the post-apartheid dispensation,\u201d Rodgers said in a statement.<\/p>\n

He said Mdlalose included the DA in his provincial cabinet under the position of education chairperson.<\/p>\n

\u201cDr Mdlalose served the province and his counter well during his tenure and his passing is a great loss. We send our heartfelt condolences to his party, the IFP and his family, Ulale ngokuthula Nyanda wephahla,\u201d Rodgers said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe DA would also like to wish a speedy recovery to Mama Mdlalose who is reported to be in the hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n
