Africa-Press – South-Africa. <\/strong><\/span>The parliamentary ad hoc committee investigating police corruption is concerned that it\u2019s running out of time and might only get testimony from KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in October.<\/p>\n

The committee is now considering changing its terms of reference to allow it to get evidence from other witnesses before Mkhwanazi, who is listed as the first witness to appear.<\/p>\n

The committee received a progress report on Wednesday, as it plans to start its hearings later in September and is expected to conclude by the end of October.<\/p>\n

The ad hoc committee probing allegations made by Mkhwanazi has already written to seven initial witnesses to organise their appearances and to consult.<\/p>\n

Evidence leader, advocate Norman Arendse, said that while people had responded positively, Mkhwanazi could only appear after he\u2019s done engaging the Madlanga judicial commission of inquiry, which is working on its own timetable.<\/p>\n

Mkhwanazi is expected to give his testimony to the commission for five days from 17 September, before Parliament gets his initialsubmission before his appearance.<\/p>\n

“So that might take another few days. We will then have to make the statement available to members of the committee to prepare before he\u2019s heard, and that is likely to take us into the first week of October.”<\/p>\n

Committee chairperson, Soviet Lekganyane, said the committee would have to change its terms of reference so it could start with a different witness, as it waits for Mkhwanazi to conclude his testimony at the commission.<\/p>\n
