However, Nedbank told Daily Investor that there are certain things South Africans can do to make travel more affordable.

“If you start to plan and save early, you can make your holiday a breeze,” the bank said. “Saving takes discipline, and it is tempting to spend a few rand here and there when you have extra cash just sitting in your account.”

“A notice savings account helps you resist temptation and exercise self-discipline, because you cannot withdraw money immediately on an impulse.”

These accounts also offer better interest rates than regular savings accounts and offer consumers a secure way to manage and grow their savings.

“You can also set up a scheduled automatic transfer to deposit a set amount into your savings account on payday every month. That way, you will not even miss the money that you are saving.”

Since it takes so much effort and self-control to save for a vacation, Nedbank urged consumers to make their money go further by taking advantage of the best deals.

There are several ways to do this. First, the bank recommended using a credit card when booking a vacation.

“Credit cards get a bad rap when used irresponsibly, but their benefits can make travel easier and more comfortable,” the bank explained.

“You get free travel insurance, airport lounge access and travel discounts when you pay with your credit card – and if you pay the full outstanding balance every month, you pay no interest.”

Taking advantage of banking loyalty rewards, such as Nedbank’s Greenbacks or Standard Bank’s UCount rewards, can also help make a trip more affordable.

Finding the best deals

Booking a holiday during specific periods can also cut down the cost of a vacation, Nedbank explained. “Peak holiday season also means peak prices,” it said.

“However, earlier in the year, travel agencies often offer significantly cheaper deals. Sign up for newsletters to get the latest early-bird specials delivered to your inbox.”

Those planning a family holiday can also save by looking for options that allow children to stay for free when accompanied by paying adults. The same applies to meals and activities.

“Do not just book the first deal you find,” Nedbank added. “Compare travel deals with different service providers. Also, look at what the cost would be if you booked directly with the hotel instead.”

The bank also warned that consumers should be careful not to fall for an unreliable travel company scam when looking for a good deal.

“They might offer you a good deal today, but disappear as soon as you have paid for your booking. Look at online reviews and double-check the agency’s credentials before you share any confidential information,” the bank said.

Another way South Africans can save on their travels is by going to countries where the rand offers a favourable exchange rate.

Often, the weak rand is a deterrent for travellers, since it can make spending in overseas countries unaffordable. Even affordable meals in places like Europe or the United States can easily set South Africans back over R400 per person.

However, Nedbank said there are a few countries where the rand is stronger than the local currency, making international travel more affordable. “You just need to know where to go,” the bank said.

Listed below are some cheaper travel options where the rand will take South Africans far, according to Nedbank. Many of these destinations can also be visited without a VISA, making it even more accessible.

Thailand

“Thailand is a popular travel spot for South Africans,” the bank said. “The country is rich in history and diverse cultures, while still offering vibrant nightlife – try Khaosan Road, Bangkok and Bangla Road, Phuket.”

“Its main attractions are soft, sandy beaches – another Phuket speciality – sunny weather, and island hopping.”

Exchange rate – R1 equals ฿1.90
Turkey

“From the majestic Hagia Sophia mosque to the ancient ruins of Ephesus, Turkey is a melting pot of diversity,” Nedbank said.

“It is a feast for the eyes and the tummy, with culinary influences that blend Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Central Asian flavours.”

Exchange rate – R1 equals ₺2.44
Mauritius

According to Nedbank, Mauritius is an excellent option for a remote island vacation that will leave visitors feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

“As a South African citizen, you will need a travel visa to enter the country, but this is free, which is another plus when looking for a cheaper holiday,” the bank said.

You will find plenty of all-inclusive holiday packages that include flights, accommodation, and meals, to stretch your rand even further.

Exchange rate – R1 equals Rs2.63
India

For travellers keen to discover one of the world’s oldest civilisations, now a vibrant modern powerhouse, the bank said India is a great destination that won’t break the bank.

“India is renowned for its spices in a variety of dishes, from fiery biryanis and creamy kormas to sweet mango lassies.
